MIDDLETON, Wis. — In the past, Sylvia Wiesenthal, 71, would ask patients to promise they’d take their medicine. One couple just before they were getting a divorce said they’d stop taking their antidepressants.

But there’s not much that anyone can do to combat a growing problem that’s affecting millions of Americans: a lack of mental health treatment.

“Without treatment, this will be a very sicker, sicker patient, with more and more chronic, terrible, long-term mental health disorders,” said Gary Craig, CEO of the Wisconsin-based Mental Health Association of Wisconsin.

Sylvia Wiesenthal’s grandfather was a doctor. She grew up always wanting to follow in his footsteps. But in her mid-60s, when she was starting her current job as a health care provider, she had no idea that she’d be doing some of the work of medical marijuana as well.

“It was a surprise to me. I didn’t even know this stuff existed,” she said. “I have to say, though, that I think that’s going to evolve as things change. I think people will realize more that it’s not just me and my friends in the ’60s, and ’70s and ’80s. It’s starting to be more accepted by more people.”

Wiesenthal is prescribing marijuana for more than a dozen patients at the Middleton medical clinic she runs. She says many of them have been dealing with traumatic, life-altering health problems, but they can’t get past the legal and medical hurdles to get their hands on it.

“I love it. I love using it. It’s a wonderful, wonderful medicine. It’s good for the body, and it’s good for the mind,” she said. “It’s good for everything and anything.”

Health insurance is among the top reasons patients don’t get access to medical marijuana, according to the Pew Research Center.

Other barriers include a patchwork of state and federal laws, which don’t always provide an appropriate method for dispensing marijuana.

As drug reform has gained more political momentum, some states are making changes.

Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana, and some states and cities are considering allowing recreational pot.

While it may seem like a logical next step, the bipartisan shift doesn’t guarantee that patients
