This afternoon, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that he had nominated Angelina Jolie to serve as United States Special Envoy for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Jolie — who currently serves as Special Envoy for the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR — has never held a U.S. government job. Her appointment to the post is the latest in a string of appointments in recent years that has seen one-time non-government actors assume increasingly powerful diplomatic roles. Jolie had no experience with diplomacy before assuming her current post, yet now Trump’s administration has made her the top-ranking U.S. diplomat in global refugee relief.
In announcing Jolie’s nomination, Tillerson praised her as “a tireless advocate for refugees and displaced persons around the globe,” saying that the special envoy role was a natural fit for her.
“Angelina Jolie is the most accomplished and well-respected humanitarian in the world today,” Tillerson said. “Her experience, breadth of knowledge, creativity and leadership are exactly the kinds of qualities we need to address our refugee crisis.”
The nomination marks a new chapter in Jolie’s storied career as a celebrity. Since 2001, she has worked with the UNHCR to help refugees flee from war and disaster, beginning with her work in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. Since then, she has worked in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nigeria, among other countries.
Jolie also served as U.N. special envoy for the Western Sahara, a post that she held from 2002 to 2004.
Since 2001, Jolie has been married twice: first to actor Brad Pitt in 2004, then to actress Jennifer Aniston in 2005. The couple have three children together: Maddox, 14; Shiloh, 13; and Zahara, 11.

In the present study, the prevalence of T. gondii infection in dairy cattle from different herds in Serbia was investigated using the modified agglutination test (MAT) and Western blotting (WB). Sera obtained from 503 cattle (35 of which were positive) were examined. Seroprevalence was 9.2% by the MAT and 24.5% by the WB. The highest prevalence was found in the five herds where the animals were used for the milk production. Within these five herds, 29% of the sampled animals were positive for the parasite. In one herd, all cows and a few of the bulls were positive. In another herd, 26.6% of the females were seropositive. Three of five herds had an elevated prevalence, suggesting active T. gondii infection in these herds. The seropositive animals were divided into two groups, one positive by the WB and MAT (group I), and one positive by the WB only (group II). One positive animal in group I was identified as having possible acute infection. Another was the only seropositive bull in the herd. The third one was the only seropositive calf in group II. These results suggest that in order to understand the epidemiology of T. gondii infection in dairy cattle, both routine screening of the entire herd, and sampling of high-risk animals are indicated.The present invention relates to a treatment of fabric by ultrasonic radiation.
